{"id":1355,"date":"2021-03-21T10:37:34","date_gmt":"2021-03-21T14:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/?p=1355"},"modified":"2021-03-21T13:20:32","modified_gmt":"2021-03-21T17:20:32","slug":"like-a-bird-in-the-spring-litbits-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/like-a-bird-in-the-spring-litbits-12\/","title":{"rendered":"Like a Bird in the Spring\u2014LitBits #12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Since my last LitBits, two years have slid past, and with them, two surgeries, an ongoing pandemic, and another book begging now to be unpacked.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><!--more--><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Books Unpacked began as a place to mull over the meaning of the object we call \u201cbook.\u201d Those musings were part of what became\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/gutenbergs-fingerprint.html\">Gutenburg\u2019s Fingerprint: Paper, Pixels, and the Lasting Impression of Books<\/a>.<\/em> When I started working on a new novel, I wrote about where characters come from, the necessary pain of re-vision, the challenge of a story that crossed continents and a century to become <a href=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books.html#refuge\"><em>Refuge<\/em><\/a>. When a freak flood destroyed most of what we owned, including a wall of books and boxes of manuscripts, I wrote about that, too. And about reading and libraries and bookshops and really, anything to do with shaping words into something that can be shared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There are, I discovered, endless ways to unpack books.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Return Migration<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1359\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/B19-Louise-birdwatching-smoking-2.jpg\" rel=\"wpdevart_lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1359\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1359\" src=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/B19-Louise-birdwatching-smoking-2-300x284.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by\" width=\"300\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/B19-Louise-birdwatching-smoking-2-300x284.jpg 300w, https:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/B19-Louise-birdwatching-smoking-2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Louise de Kiriline Lawrence c. 1941<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">On the first\u00a0day of spring 2021, a new edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/\"><em>Books Unpacked<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>will begin an exploration into life history, the idea at the heart of my current work-in-progress, <em>Woman, Watching,<\/em>\u00a0a biography\/memoir about a woman who lived most of her life in a log cabin in the bush, watching birds. Louise de Kiriline Lawrence was many things\u2014a Swedish debutante, an escapee from Bolshevist Russia, a Northern Ontario nurse, a Quintmania celebrity\u2014but what gave her life its deepest meaning and my book its sharpest focus were her years with the songbirds of Pimisi Bay.\u00a0<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In Books Unpacked, I\u2019ll be writing about Louise and the struggles of making sense of another person\u2019s life. I\u2019ll tell stories, too, of other amateur naturalists who travelled into the wilderness to sit among brambles and black flies to bring back news of what they&#8217;d seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I knew Louise from my own time in the northern Ontario bush, so I\u2019ll be writing about memoir, too: the difference between recollection, reconstruction, and creation. The narrator who intrudes. I miss that visceral connection with readers. But as a reader, I love seeing and hearing my favourite authors and those I have yet to read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sanmiguelwritersconference.org\/\">San Miguel Writers\u2019 Conference<\/a> has reimagined itself as &#8220;A Literary Season Online,&#8221; where you can hear bestselling authors such Simon Winchester, Isabel Wilkerson, Diana Gabaldon, Emma Donoghue, Isabel Allende, and Margaret Atwood; Latinx writers such as Yuri Herrera, Margo Glantz, and Richard Blanco, and new voices such as Souvankham Thammavongsa, winner of the 2020 Scotiabank Giller Prize, with whom I spoke in January. It takes something like\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgesaundersbooks.com\/\"><em>A Swim in a Pond in the Rain<\/em><\/a> by George Saunders to slow me down. This unusual and brilliant book reproduces seven classic Russian short stories that Saunders has been teaching for twenty years to his MFA creative writing students. In the course of parsing the stories, he illuminates how narrative works, why we sink into some stories and resist others. Readers will have their eyes opened to some great fiction and to the writing process. Writers will see what they do in new, inspiring ways. The book was on my bedside table for three weeks and now it is on my desk, close at hand for reading snippets. Some brilliant writing in this chocolate-box sampler: Eloghosa Osunde reading the opening of her story \u201cGood Boy,\u201d Lydia Davis reading her flash fiction<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe Left Hand\u201d,\u00a0<span class=\"s6\">translator Patricio Ferrari recites \u201cCrater of the Beginning\u201d by Portuguese poet Ant\u00f3nio Os\u00f3rio, to mention just a few.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"p11\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">My Exploding Head\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p12\"><a href=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/images-6.jpg\" rel=\"wpdevart_lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1350 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/images-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a>On and off for years, I\u2019ve awakened suddenly in the night to a sharp, loud noise. I lie in bed, panting in terror, thinking a roof beam has cracked or a thief has dropped the silver or a car bomb has exploded outside my door. At first, I\u2019d creep through the house investigating. Now I struggle to slow my breathing, telling myself it is nothing, just my exploding head.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\">Exploding Head Syndrome, a kind of auditory hallucination, has been noted for centuries, but only got its name in 1988. I came across it recently in an episode of\u00a0<em>Doc Martin<\/em>, of all things. Aha! I thought.
