Winston\u2019s job is to erase politically inconvenient data from the public record, a skill that continues to be in demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This spring, <i>1984<\/i> has <\/span>has been vying with Margaret Atwood\u2019s <em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> for top spot on the <em>New York Times <\/em>Bestseller List. Published three dozen years after <em>1984, The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em> presents a very different dystopia, but such a compelling and striking one that <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2qCqgqv\">women activists <\/a>dressed in the trademark <span class=\"s4\">scarlet robes and white blinkered bonnets have shown up at protests this spring, just as the first episodes of the television series based on the book aired.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AP_17143622099586.jpg\" rel=\"wpdevart_lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-620\" src=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AP_17143622099586-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AP_17143622099586-300x176.jpg 300w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AP_17143622099586-768x450.jpg 768w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AP_17143622099586-600x351.jpg 600w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AP_17143622099586.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Atwood wrote her dystopia after the election of Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s. <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Orwell wrote 1984 in the mid 1940s as Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin carved up Europe and the Middle East, setting the stage for the big chill we remember as the cold war\u2014a phrase Orwell coined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">Here we are another 35 years on, and one wonders what busy fingers are taking inspiration from Trump, May, Le Pen, and Putin, writing a dystopia for <em>our<\/em> times.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>Readers Do It By the Book<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Book readers make the best lovers. <a href=\"http:\/\/ind.pn\/2pdGaSG\">So says eHarmony<\/a>, a dating site that<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> found those who listed reading as a hobby on their dating profile were more appealing to the opposite sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not just any book, though. Men who were reading <i>T<\/i><em>he Girl With the Dragon Tattoo<\/em><i> <\/i>received 36% more attention; those reading <i>T<\/i><em>he daVinci Code<\/em><i> <\/i>only 5%. This coming weekend I\u2019ll be at the Alice Munro Festival of the Short Story in Wingham, Ontario (girlhood home of Alice Munro), then I take a hiatus until the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merilynsimonds.com\/author-events.html\">fall festivals<\/a> in Kingston, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Sudbury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1127-e1496285979236.jpg\" rel=\"wpdevart_lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-621\" src=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1127-e1496285979236-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1127-e1496285979236-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1127-e1496285979236.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>What I love about festivals is meeting so many great readers and writers.
