Yes, the sidewalks still insist we tread single file; the Parroquia still glows pink as the sun sets; the iron benches in the Jardin still hoard the day\u2019s warmth. But look! The giant Christmas tree has moved to Plaza Civica. From our new digs, I hear the bells of not three churches, but five.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"> This first walk settles me in the same way that running my fingers over the spines of my books settles me: reading the titles, even thinking of them, lifts my heart into a place that is at once familiar and everlastingly new.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A book is<i> <\/i>a place, as surely as a city is. We think of place now as scrap of geography, but in it oldest sense, \u201cplace\u201d defined the boundaries of any three-dimensional object. And the place of a book is broad and deep indeed. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><b>News of the World<\/b><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><b>Books as Politics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Books-not-guns2.jpeg\" rel=\"wpdevart_lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1201\" src=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Books-not-guns2-256x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Books-not-guns2-256x300.jpeg 256w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Books-not-guns2-768x902.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Books-not-guns2-872x1024.jpeg 872w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Books-not-guns2-600x704.jpeg 600w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Books-not-guns2.jpeg 1162w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a>In Brazil\u2019s first-round election on October 7, supporters of right-wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro posted images of themselves on the Internet, voting with their guns at their sides. Bolsonaro, nicknamed \u201cTropical Trump,\u201d was promising to relax gun control so that \u201cgood people\u201d could take justice into their own hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In response, supporters of the leftist candidate, Fernando Haddad, carried books to the voting polls. The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>authors and titles were carefully chosen: Hannah Arendt, Simone de Beauvoir, <em>1984, How Democracies Die, The Importance of the Act of Reading<\/em> by Brazilian Paulo Freire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In yet another<span class=\"s1\"> dramatic swing to the right, <\/span>Bolsonaro won the election in\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">the world&#8217;s fourth-largest democracy. <\/span>But the hashtags <span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/maislivrosmenosarmas?lang=en\">#MaisLivrosMenosArmas<\/a>\u00a0(More Books, Fewer Guns) and #<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/livrosim?src=hash&amp;lang=en\">LivroSim<\/a> #<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/armanao\">ArmaNao<\/a> (Books Yes, Guns No)<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> live on\u2014like books themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p4\"><b>Books as Community<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/october-books.jpg\" rel=\"wpdevart_lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1203 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/october-books-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/october-books-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/october-books-768x432.jpg 768w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/october-books-600x338.jpg 600w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/october-books.jpg 780w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.octoberbooks.org\">October Books<\/a> refers to itself as \u201clocal, radical, and eco-friendly.&#8221; A beloved fixture in Southampton, England, it opened in 1977. It has moved several times in its 40+ years, and again, on October 29, it had to relocate, this time to a building just a few blocks down Portswood Road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">Moving printed books is heavy work, as anyone with even a small library knows. So the bookshop made a plea on its website: \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s1\">we are looking for people who are able to help lift and shift boxes, furniture, shelving and general awkwardly shaped things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">More than 200 volunteers showed up, from wee children to octagenarians, enough to make a human chain that passed 2,000 books hand-to-hand from the old store to the new.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">And thanks to donations and loans from its supporters, October Books was able to buy the former bank building that is the new\u2014and permanent\u2014home for its books.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p4\"><b>Books as Tools<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\">A friend of mine returned from her Thanksgiving celebrations last week in San Diego, California, to a super storm in Kansas that encased her car in ice. Her flight had been delayed, so there she was at 2 am in the airport parking lot, without an ice scraper in her carry-on. She did have books, however, including a hardcover she\u2019d picked up at a dollar sale. It still wore the heavy plastic cover from its former life in a public library, and so she set to work cracking and chipping the ice with her new-to-her book.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Not only did the book rescue her car, it survived to be read again\u2014which goes to show that books are the cure for just about everything.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><b>News from my Casita<\/b><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsz_view_from_my_casita-2.jpg\" rel=\"wpdevart_lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-927 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsz_view_from_my_casita-2-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsz_view_from_my_casita-2-264x300.jpg 264w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsz_view_from_my_casita-2-768x874.jpg 768w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsz_view_from_my_casita-2-600x683.jpg 600w, http:\/\/merilynsimonds.com\/books-unpacked-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/rsz_view_from_my_casita-2.jpg 875w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Due to a series of persistent pneumonias, I had to cancel far too many of my fall appearances with my new novel <em>Refuge<\/em>. As Lorna Crozier said to me, sending a book out into the world unaccompanied feels a bit like launching it into a great wide sea in a captainless paper boat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But readers have been generous, posting reviews on Amazon and Goodreads and sending me cheering notes and interesting comments on Cass and Nang and their island dilemma. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>Refuge <\/em>has just become\u00a0available on Audible.ca, read by the marvellous, award-winning Xe Sands, who went to great lengths to find a coach for the Shan Burmese in the book. The Spanish, French, and English posed no challenge for this multi-lingual &#8220;voicer,&#8221; which is how she refers to herself and the work she does. She does not &#8220;read&#8221; the book aloud. She does not narrate it (the book already has a prose narrator.) That year, the concept of the World Wide Web was discussed for the first time. Begun by a group of writers in 1973, it offers workshops and handbooks, consults on contracts, oversees several prizes, publishes a magazine, and hosts writers&#8217; gatherings. For me, I found a community, a place where I felt I could finally say out loud, \u201cI, too, am a writer.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p11\"><b>Links I Love<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/spotlight\/the-week-in-good-news\">Good News!<\/a> With the world turning to the right and media shouting murder and mayhem from the rooftops, I am grateful to the <em>New York Times<\/em> for sending their Good News into my inbox every week. I am rarely in one place long enough to join one, but I love visiting them and listening in on the conversations\u2014especially when they are about my books. I always learn something new that I didn&#8217;t know I&#8217;d put into the story.
